Overview

The Novostella 20W Smart LED Flood Light is very flexible. It can be mounted easily both indoors and outdoors. It has many shades of white colors, 16 million RGB colors, and 8 preset scenes. It can be controlled by an App or just by voice. Moreover, it can be controlled individually or in a group.

The first thing I noticed about the Novostella Smart LED Flood light is how well and solid it is built. It has a very thick and strong metallic housing. It’s rated IP66 waterproof so it can be used both indoors and outdoors.

It’s not a big light. At just 6” wide, 4” tall, and 1.25” thick, the flood light can be mounted easily out of sight and out of the way. It even comes with a metal mounting bracket attached for easy mounting. The mounting bracket can be adjusted 180 degrees to aim the light in the desired direction. It also comes with a powerful antenna for stable Wi-Fi connection.

Color and Brightness

At first, I was concerned that the 20W version with 2000 lumens wouldn’t be bright enough outdoors. To my surprise, 2000 lumens is quite bright especially when the light is in its various white colors. The light housing does get warm to the touch after some time. The heatsink-like ridges in the back of the housing help to dissipate heat nicely.

The white colors can be adjusted between 2700K warm white to 6500K daylight white at any brightness. In addition to the white colors, the light can be set to any one of the 16 million possible RGB colors at any brightness and saturation. In addition to these custom settings, there are 8 preset scenes perfect for setting the desired mood during parties or holidays. Scenes like Colorful and Dazzling can be great for Christmas. I especially love the colors the light cycles through in the Gorgeous scene mode. It’s truly… gorgeous.

How to connect Novostella smart floodlight? - Two Solutions

To control the light, it needs to be connected to the Smart Life app on an iPhone or Android phone first. There is QR code in the instruction manual to link to the app. Once logged into the app, tape “+” to add the light. The trickiest part is putting the light in one of the two pairing modes. The light needs to turn on and off 3 times to be in the first pairing mode. Since this Wi-Fi flood light doesn’t come with an on/off switch, it’s easiest to plug it into a power strip with a switch to turn it on and off 3 times (on-off-on-off-on). The light should flash quickly (about twice a second).

If the light isn’t found by the app in this pairing mode, I found the AP pairing mode to be much more reliable. To enable the AP pairing mode, the light needs to be switched on and off 3 more times. The light will then flash slowly (once every 2 seconds). In the AP mode, the phone’s Wi-Fi needs to be changed to connect to the light so the light can be added in the Smart Life app. Only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is supported. It’d be great if the next version of the light can have a few buttons to control the light directly without having to always rely on the Wi-Fi connection.

Touchless Voice Control

Once the light is added, it can be controlled easily within the app. The light can be turned on and off, set to any brightness, color, or preset scene. There are also a timer and a scheduling function to turn the light on and off automatically with notification. The light can also be added to Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control, group control, and further automation.

In summary, the Novostella 20W Smart LED Flood light is so flexible and well built. I plan to use one indoors to create an accent wall, and another one outdoors to light up my maple tree at night. I can control both with my voice via Alexa and Google Assistant or with the app from anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection! I can’t wait until I can spice things up a bit with these lights during Christmas!
